Footprints in Stone
Ancient and Sacred Sites of Scotland

The history of Scotland is a rich tapestry woven from volcanic fires forming land masses and frozen glaciers melting to form fertile valleys and wild rivers where ancient folks settled and planted the rich seeds of society, ancient science, astronomy, agriculture and spirituality, the very elements that formed the culture of Scotland today. Footprints In Stone is a journey, a pilgrimage, to these ancient and sacred sites throughout Scotland, the wildest place in Europe.

The back roads, the lesser known sites, the secret coves and hidden glens will be the map for our journey that will take us back in time to the first footprints of humanity as we visit areas such as the Kilmartin Valley and Clava Cairns where ancient tombs and temple sites dating back 5,000 years dot the landscape.

We will find ourselves in the shadow of Iron Age Scotland when a longing to expand the horizons of society took hold and humanity grew by leaps and bounds, travelling the known world creating great settlements such as found at Dunadd, the great Kingdom of Dalriada, where the Scottish nation was born.

The Celts, the Picts, the Romans, the early Christians lead by St. Columba and the Scotti of Ireland will all tell us their story as we visit ancient crannogs, Roman walls, monsters and sanctuaries of the saints.

With the establishment of boundaries came the building of castles and the forming of clans and these great families will tell us their legends of victory and defeat all the way from early castles, great palaces, Rosslyn Chapel to the sacred Battlefield of Culloden.

And all the while, around every bend in the road, the vertical world of the Highlands will rise up, the rolling land of the Campbell Peninsula will meet the sea and in the far distance you will see Ireland. From the magnificent Isle of Skye, to the gentle land of the Black Isle and the Moray Firth, the land will tell it’s story of fire and ice.

This is a unique opportunity to travel in a small group, no larger than 8 lead by private guides/historians with personal drivers who share the same enthusiasm for the adventure as you.

Your hosts arrange all the details of accommodations, ground transportation, petrol, parking, ferries, and sites visited in advance. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the adventure knowing we have taken care of every detail.

Your guides for this adventure are Christy Gray and Felicia Kautz, who share a vast knowledge of Scotland’s ancient, natural and cultural history as well as a great love for the society and people of Scotland.

Christy Gray, descendant of Clans Robertson, Bruce and Graham, has been leading groups on tours of The British Isles since 1991. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a BS in Education and a BFA in Fine Arts, Christy has studied extensively through out Europe and Britain since 1985. She brings to the adventure a vast knowledge of the social and natural history of Scotland, from ancient to modern times.

With her years of experience as a guide in the British Isles, she can lead you down the back roads, to the wild and hidden places. She knows where to find the best pubs and the really great, fresh seafood. She knows where local art, traditional music and story telling can be found. With Christy at the helm, you will experience the secret Scotland most pilgrims never see.

Felicia Kautz, a descendant of Clan Chisholm, has a deep and abiding love for Scotland. Holding degrees from the University of Georgia, a BA in Political Science and a BS in Animal and Dairy Science, inspired her to travel abroad to study the political, social, agricultural and historical aspects of Scotland. Her knowledge and expertise in these fields make for an interesting and unique experience with her as guide. Through the retracing her own clan roots, she brings to the tour a vast knowledge of ancient people and their evolution into the modern culture of Scotland.

As an artist and an avid hiker, she brings to the tour an appreciation of the natural beauty of the flora, fauna and geology of Scotland. Her ability to lead guests on hikes and treks back to the remote sites is invaluable.

Both Christy and Felicia’s sharing of their knowledge of Scotland along with their senses of humor and joy, make for a delightful experience.
As mature and experienced drivers, you will find from the time you are greeted upon arrival to when you are bid farewell, your safety, comfort, and enjoyment are your guide’s up most focus.

We hope you will become inspired to join us for this great adventure of Footprints In Stone, Ancient and Sacred Sites of Scotland.
